Woke to the sound of men outside the bedroom door. There has been a leak from the bathroom to the dining room and apparently they were here to solve it. As I had already established that the cause was a split coupling on the shower head I jumped out of bed and went to talk to them. The guys did a test and felt the same thing so went off to buy a new shower head. Ash and I ate left over chicken wings, watched Ink Master and waited for them to come back. Donny returned, solved the problem and sat around chatting as he had lived out west and was surprised not to know where Bella Bella was. He seems a nice man as I said to Ash, he’s just my type… Nice eyes, good teeth and can string a few words together…
We dropped off Rati on our way to Quidi Vidi. It’s a blustery cold day but blueish sky. Quidi Vidi is simply lovely and it has the coolest narrows and a brewery that has cobalt blue bottles
I picked up a few treasures at the brewery and then drove up to the battery (there’s sure a lot of them here) where we looked across to Cape Spear and the ocean was nasty although the scenery beautiful.
Next we went to Harbourside Park and the War Memorial where we hung out with the dogs and the birds
To get warm again we wandered through a couple shops. I bought a guitar pick that says ‘I kissed a cod and I liked it ‘ Once again we were on the road, this time to grab a bite on our way to where Ash had seen big freezy waves. We stopped at McDonald’s and I was reminded again why I don’t do fast food
we finally got to the spot , around the corner from where we went on Boxing Day and it was ridiculously cold and beautiful and I beach combed for quite a while until sanity prevailed and I headed back for the car and heat
Final stop on our sober tour of the day was The Fluvarium. When we went in it was very quiet and a nice man came and said they would be closed in an hour, and they were short staffed but if we would like to wander, no charge. A Fluvarium is a window to a creek. It was really cool, we enjoyed it a lot.
I have earrings at home from Ash made of these
we left at closing and some one was coming up the dog path with his pup and his son. It was Alan Doyle. He’s from Great Big Sea and Ash had got him to sign a copy of his autobiography for me for Christmas. We chatted about his dog but didn’t acknowledge we knew him at first but once we were in our vehicles I Asked Ash to pull up on his side and I motioned to roll the window down.
I told him I didn’t want to disturb his afternoon but I did have his book and thank you for the autograph, I would be taking it home to BC and was looking forward to reading it. He asked where I was from and said he was playing in Prince George in a few weeks (Winter Games). I asked if I could take a shot and he posed!
what a time I’ve had… At Shanneyganock I told my daughter that often I would have reaction to someone like Patrick the Fiddle player but end up dating the bass player and then we meet the bass player a few days later (no end up with, just to clarify), before I came here I was disappointed that I wouldn’t see any filming of Republic of Doyle and then we run into and chat with one of the lead actresses, Ash gives me an autographed book from Alan Doyle, we visit his home town, Petty Harbour… And then run into him. Maybe I should have thought more about the Atlantic Lottery.
Came back to the house to shower and ready to go out again
Ash diagnosed her roommate with a knife for a tongue depressor (strep throat)
And then we grabbed a cab down to Shamrock City for dinner and entertainment
We had a nice time and then decided that since we had already seen Rum Ragged in concert we would check out every bar on George Street that was open. So fun! It is so odd here, there are so many bars here, many with cover charges even on a Tuesday night, some have music every night and it often doesn’t start until 10:30. We met so many lonely bartenders but finally ended up at Christians for a last one. The bartender was cranky but I left a note on the back of my card for Brian who screeched us in to say thank you for the brainscar and then we grabbed a cab home
all in all I believe it was 19 bars attended at least once since I’ve been here on that strip!
